The Region of Epirus/Regional Unit of Thesprotia as a partner of the European project «Adriatic Model Forest-AMF» which is co-funded by the Axis 2 the European Initiative IPA ADRIATICA 2007-2013, organized the 3rd International Meeting entitled «The governance in a Model Forest: exchange of experience» from 11th to 13th of February 2014. The meeting took place at the city of Igoumenitsa and includes presentations from AMF partners and local stakeholders as well as a field trip to the region of Western Macedonia, in order to visit and learn from the example of the local “Model Forest Grevena”.
More specifically, the first day of the meeting opened with Mr. Thomas PITOULIS – Regional Governor of the RU of Thesprotia, who welcomed the participants, emphasizing importance of cooperation and experience-exchange among the Adriatic countries on the topic of sustainable development within the AMF project. Notably, many representatives from local stakeholders were present during the first day of the meeting.
On behalf of the LP Project Coordinator Mrs. Ana FORNAŽAR presented the MF concept and development of the Dalmatian Model Forest, highlighting examples of good practices from the project partners who are already advanced in their local process of establishing MF initiatives.
Mr.Riccardo CASTELLINI (External Technical Expertise) presented the MF Governance principles as the model of sustainable management of forest resources based on bottom-up approach, while the meeting’s special guest Mrs. Marina MUÑOZ DURÁN presented the Governance of the Florentine Mountains Model Forest, emphasizing specific governance approach of this MF initiative. Afterwards, all participant partners presented the forest governance processes on the selected MF sites in their countries with suggestions for their local solutions, while the meeting’s second guest Mr. Dimitris TSIMPLINAS gave overview of the Grevena Model Forest, which in initiation was co-financed by Interreg IVC programme.
The second day of the meeting was dedicated at the field trip to Grevena, where the Grevena Model Forest is implemented. After the meeting at the Municipality of Grevena, with the representatives of the Grevena Model Forest, the AMF group visited the “EYXYLON” wood industry, where they had the opportunity to witness the whole process of the wood remaking. The visit ended at Spilaio village where the AMF partners had the opportunity to taste local food, especially mushrooms for which the area of Grevena is famous of.
The third day started with the Steering Committee Meeting of the IPA AMF project. Project partners were informed about future activities of the project implementation and it was announced that the 4th IM of IPA AMF project meeting will be organized by the Institute of Forestry,Belgrade in Belgrade, Serbia at the beginning of July 2014.
